Firefighters in Los Alamos, N.M., try to hold their ground against a raging blaze May 10. But high winds whipped up the fire and forced them to retreat. The conflagration forced the evacuation of 25,000 people and destroyed hundreds of homes in the Los Alamos area.

Sudden landing
