Suffragette City Leading the march for civil rights in the 20th century were women. "Suffragettes" in Britain and the United States worked for change, first through calm persuasion, then through more forceful means. They broke street lamps, cut telephone lines, and one woman in England even threw herself in front of a horse and was killed. Ultimately, they won the right to vote. In this 1917 photo, women march to the White House. (AP Photo) |
