Passage 1
Kuwait is a country which is quite small but very rich. It has a
population of a little more than a million, and it is situated at the
north end of the Arabian Gulf, which is also sometimes called the Persian
Gulf. The land area is about 8,000 square miles. Kuwait’s climate is one
of the hottest in the world. In the summer, the temperature often reaches
124°Fahrenheit during the day. That’s about 51.1°on the Centigrade
scale. Temperatures are naturally cooler during the winter. They range
between 50°and 60°Fahrenheit.
Until oil was discovered there in 1938,Kuwait was a little-known
country. Today this small desert country has become one of the world’s
leading oil producers: it has approximately 15 percent of the world’s
known petroleum reserves.
Since the discovery of oil, Kuwait’s rulers have turned the
country into a prosperous welfare state. It has free primary and secondary
education, free health care and social services; and the people do not
have to pay any personal income tax for those services. It has become one
of the world’s richest nations. Though Kuwait has free primary and
secondary education for its people, many of them still do not know how to
read and write. The University of Kuwait was opened in 1966, but many of
the students still study in colleges and universities abroad, at the state
expense.

D.It is a small country

3) The students in Kuwait ________.
A.study well because of free education

government
Passage 2
Most worth-while careers require some kind of specialized
training. Ideally, therefore, the choice of an occupation should be made
even before the choice of a curriculum(课程) in high school. Actually,
however, most persons make several job choices during their working lives,
partly because of economic and industrial changes and partly to improve
their positions. The “one perfect job” does not exist. Young people
should therefore enter into a broad flexible training program that will
fit them for a field of work rather than for a single job.
Unfortunately many young people, knowing little about the
occupational world or themselves for that matter, choose their lifework on
a hit-or-miss basis. Some drift from job to job. Others stick to work in
which they are unhappy and for which they are not fitted.
One common mistake is choosing an occupation for its real or
imagined prestige(声望). Too many high-school students--or their parents
for themchoose the professional field, disregarding both the
relatively small proportion of workers in the professions and the
extremely high educational and personal requirements. The imagined or real
prestige of a profession or a “white-collar” job is no good reason for
choosing it as a life’s work. Moreover, these occupations are not always
well paid. Since a large proportion of jobs are in mechanical and manual
work, the majority of young people should give serious consideration to
these fields.
Before making an occupational choice. A person should have a
general idea of what he wants out of life and how hard he is willing to
work to get it. Some people desire social prestige, others intellectual
satisfaction. Some want security, others are willing to take risks for
financial gain. Each occupational choice has its demands as well as its
rewards.
1)According to the passage, the economic and industrial changes
as well as people’s desire to improve their positions can usually lead
to ________.
A.the existence of “one perfect job”
B.the increase in training programs
C.the changes in training programs
D.the decrease in the number of worth-while careers
2)The author indicates that young people would not change their
jobs very often or would fit for their jobs better if they ________.
A.knew the jobs and themselves well
B.had a good curriculum in high school
C.happened to have the “one perfect job”
D.could get used to their working lives
3)The author suggests that most young people should ________.
A.choose a job of real prestige
B.compete for a “white-collar” job
C.get advice from their parents for a job
D.consider jobs in mechanical and manual fields
4)The main idea of the passage is about ________.
A.how to make a self-analysis in terms of an occupation
B.what to consider when choosing an occupation
C.how to choose a well-paid occupation
D.what to do to survive in the occupational world
Passage 3
The whole atmosphere of the world in which we live is influenced
by science, as is shown most immediately by our modern conveniences and
material resources. A little deeper thinking shows that the influence of
science goes much farther and colors the entire mental outlook of modern
civilized man on the world about him. Perhaps one of the most telling
evidences of this is his growing freedom from superstition(迷信).
Freedom from superstition is the result of the belief that the world is
not governed by sudden and foolish wishes, but that it is a world of order
and can be understood by man if he will only try hard enough and be clever
enough. This belief that the world is understandable is, doubtless, the
most important single gift of science to civilization. The widespread
acceptance of this view can be dated to the discovery by Newton of the
universal influence of the law of gravitation; and for this reason Newton
may be justly regarded as the most important person who made great
contributions to modern life.
1) The author’s chief purpose in writing this passage is
________.
A.to give an opinion of the chief benefit of science
B.to inform readers about important scientific principles
C.to list the modern conveniences produced by science
D.to persuade readers that science leads to civilization
2) The underlined word “colors” is closest in meaning to
________.
A.“makes beautiful”
B.“makes colorful”
C.“gives a new meaning to”
D.“gives a special effect to”
3)According to the author, Newton’s chief contribution was his
________.
A.encouragement of intelligent research
B.great book on the laws of gravity

The United States and China have a historic opportunity. We can
expand our economic and scientific cooperation, strengthen the ties
between our peoples and take an important step toward peace and a better
life. And there is much we can share. We think progress in four areas is
particularly promising: trade, technology, investment, and exchanges of
scientific achievements. In a few short years, two-way trade has risen
sharply. Expanding cooperative ventures is another area of promising
growth: American firms have invested almost $700 million in joint ventures
in China, making the United States your largest foreign investor. For your
part, some 50 Chinese firms have established offices or branches in the
United States, and China has invested in several joint ventures in our
country. We have begun to write to a new chapter for peace and progress in
our histories. I believe, together, we can and will make tomorrow a better
day.
