China has set up its first group of state technology transfer centers in six universities to promote the commercialization of technological achievements.

The six universities are the Qinghua University in Beijing, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, East China University of Science and Technology, Central China University of Science and Technology, and Sichuan University.

An opening ceremony for the centers was held recently by the State Economic and Trade Commission and the Ministry of Education at Qinghua University.

Xie Xuren, vice-director of he State Economic and Trade Commission, said nearly two thirds of China's large and medium-sized enterprises have no research and development institutes and only 30 percent of the 30,000 technological achievements are being used commercially and only 10 percent of those on a large scale.
