CAS Awards Annual Scholarships |

The Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), the country's top scientific research body, Friday awarded its annual scholarships, based on scholastic performances in 2001. Zhou Tianshou and 18 other graduate students were awarded the 2001 CAS Presidential Scholarship, and their mentors were also awarded for their instruction performance. Wang Shu and nine other doctoral degree holders received the CAS Scholarship for outstanding Ph.D's who had done an excellent job in their post-doctoral research. A total 50 doctoral degree holders were selected for aid by theWang Kuancheng Fund. Among them, 16 are doing research into basic sciences, nine are studying life sciences and bio-engineering, nine are working on resources and the environment, and the other 16 are doing research into high-technology and concerned development. Deputy Secretary-general of the CAS He Yan said that many organizations or individuals both in China and outside the countryhave shown great interest in sponsoring outstanding CAS students and researchers. At the ceremony, the Liu Yongling Scholarship, Peng Yingang Scholarship, Di'ao Scholarship, Huawei Scholarship, Baoshan Steel Scholarship and P&G Scholarship, all set up by big name enterprises, were also bestowed. So far, the CAS has trained 41,069 master's degree holders and 20,454 doctor's degree holders. The current enrollment of its graduate school is 17,440. A total of 1,130 students are carrying out their post-doctoral research programs at the academy, and 2,400 have already completed their research. |
