Russia welcomes China's consistent foreign policy (11/15/2002)
Moscow says it is pleased to see that the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has guaranteed the consistency and continuity of China's foreign policy, including the policy on developing active cooperation with Russia.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko made the statement in Moscow on Thursday.

He said Russia watched closely the congress, as it was a great event in its friendly neighboring country of China.

The congress "summed up the results of China's social and economic development, outlined the major trends of its political development and determined the priorities of its foreign policy," said the spokesman.

Yakovenko said the development of Russian-Chinese relations was based on the Good-neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, signed by the presidents of both countries on July 16, 2001. The treaty was of "great historic significance," he said.

Viewed from the results of the 16th CPC congress, the major task of future political contacts between the two countries was to further expand bilateral cooperation in all fields and strengthen coordination in international affairs, he added.
