Hu elected new Party chief, Jiang head of the military
Hu Jintao, 59, was elected as the new general secretary of the Communist Party of China at the first plenary session of the 16th Central Committee of the Party, which was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing today.

The plenary session also elected a new 9-member Political Bureau Standing Committee, headed by Hu Jintao. The other eight members are: Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan.

Jiang Zemin was re-elected to be the chairman of Central Military Commission, according to Xinhua report. Hu Jintao, Guo Boxiong and Cao Gangchuan were elected vice-chairmen of the commission. Xu Caihou, Liang Guanglie, Liao Xilong and Li Jinai were elected members of the commission.
Wu Guanzheng was elected to be secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
